If you're buying a used MacBook — or selling one — battery cycle count is the most important number to know. It tells you how much of the battery's life has been used, and it's one of the biggest factors in a pre-owned Mac's value and longevity.
Here's exactly how to find it, and what to do with that information.
What is a battery cycle?
A battery cycle is one full charge from 0% to 100% — but it doesn't have to happen in one sitting. Charging from 50% to 100% twice counts as one cycle. Apple designs MacBook batteries to retain up to 80% of their original capacity at their maximum cycle count, which varies by model.
Most modern MacBooks have a maximum cycle count of 1,000 cycles. After that, Apple considers the battery "consumed" — meaning it may hold significantly less charge than when new. The battery still works; it just won't last as long per charge.
How to check cycle count on your MacBook
It takes about 15 seconds. Here's how:
Step 1: Hold the Option (⌥) key and click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
Step 2: Click System Information.
Step 3: In the left sidebar, scroll down to Hardware and click Power.
Step 4: Under the Battery Information section, look for Cycle Count.
You'll also see Condition — which will say Normal, Replace Soon, Replace Now, or Service Battery. Any result other than Normal means the battery has degraded more than expected and should factor into your buying or pricing decision.
What's a good cycle count?
| Cycle count | Battery health | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 0–200 | Excellent | Lightly used. Battery life near-new. |
| 200–400 | Good | Normal use. Still plenty of life remaining. |
| 400–600 | Moderate | Regular use. Battery holding up well. |
| 600–800 | Ageing | Noticeable reduction in battery life. Factor into price. |
| 800–1,000 | Near end of designed life | Battery may need replacement soon. Price accordingly. |
| 1,000+ | Consumed | Apple classifies as beyond designed lifespan. Battery likely noticeably degraded. |
Should I avoid a MacBook with high cycles?
Not necessarily — but it should affect the price. A MacBook with 700 cycles might still work perfectly well for light tasks like browsing and document editing. The battery simply won't last as long per charge as it once did. MacBook batteries can be replaced (typically R1,500–R3,000 at an authorised service centre), so a high-cycle count doesn't mean a device is useless — it means the price should reflect it.
As a buyer, if someone is selling a MacBook with 900+ cycles at the same price as one with 150 cycles, that's a red flag. The seller either doesn't know or doesn't care to disclose it.
What MacShack discloses
At MacShack, every pre-owned Mac is inspected before sale — including battery cycle count and condition. We don't hide it. Our grading system (Prime, Select, Value) accounts for battery health alongside cosmetic condition, so you always know what you're buying. Read our full condition guide to understand exactly what each grade means.
If you're shopping for a pre-owned Mac and want to know the cycle count on a specific device before buying, just ask us on WhatsApp. We'll pull the number for you.
Checking cycles before you buy privately
If you're buying from a private seller, ask them to show you the System Information screen in person (or via video call). Any genuine seller will have no problem doing this. If they refuse, hesitate, or claim not to know how, that's a warning sign.
Also check the Condition field — if it says anything other than "Normal", ask why and negotiate accordingly.
The bottom line
Battery cycle count is a simple, fast health check that every used MacBook buyer should run. Under 400 cycles and you're in great shape. 400–700 is still good value with the right price. Over 800, factor in the cost of a future battery replacement.
