It's one of the most common questions we get at MacShack: should I buy new or pre-owned? The honest answer depends on your budget, your priorities, and what "pre-owned" actually means when you buy from a reputable dealer.
Here's the full picture.
The case for buying new
Buying new gives you a MacBook that has never been used, carries Apple's full one-year warranty (extendable to three years with AppleCare+), and comes in the latest configuration with the newest chip. You're the first owner. There are no surprises.
New MacBooks in South Africa start at R11,999 for the MacBook Neo and R21,999 for the MacBook Air M5. For buyers who want the absolute latest technology, the peace of mind of a factory warranty, or simply a box that's never been opened, new is the right choice.
The downside is straightforward: you pay a significant premium. A new MacBook Air M5 at R21,999 costs more than twice what a certified pre-owned MacBook Air M1 costs at MacShack. For many buyers — especially students and small business owners — that gap is hard to justify.
The case for buying pre-owned
A certified pre-owned MacBook from a reputable dealer is not the same as buying second-hand from a stranger on Gumtree. At MacShack, every pre-owned device goes through a thorough diagnostic process: we test every component, check battery health, assess cosmetic condition, and grade each device honestly using our Prime, Select, or Value grading system.
What you get is a MacBook that performs exactly as it should, at a fraction of the new price, with a warranty included.
The savings are real. A pre-owned MacBook Air M1 — still a genuinely excellent machine in 2026 — starts at R9,900 at MacShack. A pre-owned MacBook Air M2 starts from R14,900. Both come tested and warrantied.
What about the risks?
The risks of buying pre-owned come down to where you buy it. Buying from a private seller on Gumtree or Facebook carries real risk: you may not know the device's history, battery health, or whether it's been reported stolen. You have no recourse if something goes wrong.
Buying from MacShack eliminates those risks. We verify every device, check it against stolen device databases, test it fully, and back it with a warranty. If something goes wrong after the sale, we're here.
The risks most people associate with "used" devices — hidden faults, short battery life, unknown history — are the risks of buying from an unknown private seller, not from a certified dealer.
The battery question
Battery health is the most common concern with pre-owned MacBooks, and it's a fair one. MacBook batteries degrade over charge cycles. A device with 600+ cycles may have noticeably shorter battery life than a new device. That's why we inspect and disclose battery health on every pre-owned Mac we sell, and why our grading system accounts for it.
When you buy a pre-owned MacBook from MacShack, you can ask about the battery cycle count before you buy. We'll tell you. Want to check it yourself? Here's how to check MacBook battery cycles.

Which is right for you?
Buy new if: you want the absolute latest chip, need an Apple warranty, or the condition of an unopened box matters to you. The MacBook Neo at R11,999 and MacBook Air M5 at R21,999 are both excellent new options.
Buy certified pre-owned if: you want maximum value for money, you're comfortable with a machine that may have minor cosmetic marks, and you trust the dealer. A pre-owned MacBook Air M1 or M2 from MacShack delivers outstanding performance at a price that's hard to argue with.
