The best MacBook for students in South Africa

For most students, a pre-owned MacBook Air with an M1 chip or newer is the best choice: fast enough for most degrees, with all-day battery life. Pre-owned MacBooks at Mac Shack start at R10,900. Design, video and computer science students should get 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage. If your course needs Windows-only software, like SolidWorks in mechanical engineering, check with your faculty first.

3D Animation & Game Design

3D animation, game design, rendering

We recommend Talk to us first

Rendering and game engines are more common on Windows PCs with a dedicated graphics card. Some students do fine on a MacBook Pro, so tell us your course and we'll give you a straight answer.

Course advice is based on the Open Window Media & Equipment Guide 2025/26 and UCT's engineering laptop recommendations. Requirements differ between institutions, so always check your own faculty's list. We regularly show our Macs at Open Window open days.

Our three student picks

R7.47 a day. That's a R10,900 pre-owned MacBook spread over a 4-year degree.

Using a Mac at a South African university

Microsoft 365
Most South African universities give students Microsoft 365 for free. Sign in with your student email on your Mac.
Presentations
Lecture venues often use HDMI. Pack a USB-C to HDMI adapter. The 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro have HDMI built in.
Power cuts
Every pre-owned MacBook we sell has at least 80% battery health, and an Apple silicon MacBook usually lasts a full day of lectures without a plug.
Campus Wi-Fi
Macs connect to eduroam and campus Wi-Fi like any other laptop. Your IT help desk can set it up on day one.
Backups
Turn on iCloud or use an external SSD with Time Machine. Losing an assignment the night before it's due is worse than any price.
Windows-only software
If one module needs Windows software, use the campus computer labs or a virtual machine. Ask your lecturer before you buy.

Student MacBook FAQ

Is a MacBook good for university?

Yes, for most courses. MacBooks are light, fast and have all-day battery life, and Microsoft Office, Teams and Zoom all run natively. The exceptions are courses that rely on Windows-only software, such as SolidWorks in mechanical engineering and industrial design.

Which MacBook is best for students in South Africa?

For most students, a pre-owned MacBook Air with an M1 chip or newer. Pre-owned MacBooks at Mac Shack start at R10,900. Design, video and computer science students should choose 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage.

Is 8GB of memory enough for a student?

For writing, research, Office and video calls, yes. For design, video editing, coding or running Windows in a virtual machine, choose 16GB. Memory can't be upgraded later, so decide upfront.

Do you offer a student discount?

Instead of a discount, students get a free 1-year extended warranty on any pre-owned MacBook, normally from R439. Buy your MacBook, then WhatsApp us your student card or proof of registration. Standard extended warranty terms apply, including a 10% excess on claims.

MacBook Neo or a pre-owned MacBook Air for university?

The MacBook Neo is new, comes with a 1-year Apple warranty and is fine for most non-technical courses. A pre-owned MacBook Air with an M-series chip often costs less, has two Thunderbolt ports and more memory options, and handles demanding software better. For design, video or coding, choose an Air with 16GB.

Can I use a MacBook for engineering?

It depends on your discipline. Mechanical engineering and industrial design use SolidWorks, which doesn't run on macOS, so a Windows laptop is the safer choice. Other disciplines often allow a Mac. Check your faculty's software list, or WhatsApp us and we'll help. We also sell Windows laptops.

Will a pre-owned MacBook last a four-year degree?

A properly checked Apple silicon MacBook should. Every one we sell has at least 80% battery health and runs macOS 27, Apple's current version. Choose 16GB if you can, and claim the free student extended warranty for extra cover.

Do you deliver to university residences?

Yes. We deliver to university residences and home addresses anywhere in South Africa, or you can collect from our store in Bryanston, Johannesburg.

Can I pay off a MacBook monthly?

Yes. You can spread the cost with rent-to-own finance through Redtree Capital.
