Pre-owned, second-hand, used or refurbished?
You'll see all four words when you shop for a MacBook. Here's what they mean, and what you get at Mac Shack.
- Pre-owned · Second-hand · Used
- All mean the same thing: a MacBook that had a previous owner.
- Refurbished
- A pre-owned MacBook that has also been repaired or had parts replaced to bring it back to standard.
- At Mac Shack
- Every MacBook is tested before it's sold. When a part doesn't meet our standard, we replace it. If a battery is below 80% health, it gets a new battery.
What every pre-owned MacBook goes through
- Inspected by a person. A Mac Shack technician physically inspects every Mac.
- Full diagnostics. A complete hardware test using Blackbelt360 professional diagnostic software.
- Parts replaced if needed. Anything below our standard is replaced. Batteries under 80% health get a new battery.
- Erased and reset. Every Mac is wiped and reset, ready for you to set up as your own.
- Honestly graded and warrantied. Prime, Select or Value, with a 90-day Mac Shack warranty you can extend by up to 24 months.
Which pre-owned MacBook should I buy?
Buying a second-hand MacBook: FAQ
Is it worth buying a second-hand MacBook?
Yes, if it's an Apple silicon (M-series) MacBook that's been properly checked. You get the same performance as new for much less. Pre-owned MacBooks at Mac Shack start at R10,900, and every one is inspected, tested, erased and covered by a 90-day warranty.
Is it safe to buy a used MacBook?
It is when you buy from a specialist. A private seller can't show you the battery health, hidden faults or whether the Mac has been properly reset. We inspect and test every Mac, replace parts that don't meet our standard, erase and reset it, and back it with a warranty.
What warranty do pre-owned MacBooks come with?
Every pre-owned MacBook comes with a 90-day Mac Shack warranty. You can extend it by up to 24 months.
Will a pre-owned MacBook still get macOS updates?
Yes. Every Apple silicon MacBook from 2020 onward, including the M1, runs macOS 27, Apple's current version. Intel MacBooks stopped at macOS 26 Tahoe, which is why we recommend Apple silicon.
What's the difference between pre-owned and refurbished?
Pre-owned, second-hand and used all mean the MacBook had a previous owner. Refurbished means it has also been repaired or had parts replaced. At Mac Shack, any part that doesn't meet our standard is replaced. For example, batteries below 80% health get a new battery.
